Why Pressure Washing Your Eastern Ontario Home Can Do More Damage Than Good
Every summer across Eastern Ontario, the same ritual plays out in neighbourhoods from Brockville to Kingston to Smiths Falls. The snow melts, the sun comes out, and homeowners pull out their pressure washers to blast the winter grime off their siding, decks, driveways, and gutters.
It is satisfying. It looks like progress. And for some surfaces and situations, it is genuinely the right tool.
But for a significant number of the surfaces being pressure washed every summer, high-pressure water is doing more harm than good. The damage is not always immediately visible, which is part of the problem. By the time it shows up, it has usually been accumulating for a season or two.
The Problem With High-Pressure Water
Water under pressure is a powerful and indiscriminate force. On the right surface, applied correctly, it removes dirt efficiently without causing damage. On the wrong surface, or at the wrong pressure, it can cause a range of problems that cost far more to fix than the cleaning job was worth.
Here is what high-pressure washing can do to common exterior surfaces on a Brockville home:
Vinyl siding. Vinyl looks durable but is more vulnerable than it appears. High-pressure water can force its way behind the panels, introducing moisture into the wall cavity where it sits against insulation and framing. This creates conditions for mould, rot, and structural degradation that can go undetected for years. Pressure washing can also crack older or sun-damaged vinyl panels directly.
Brick and mortar. The mortar between brick is porous and softer than the brick itself. High-pressure water erodes it. On an older home, a single aggressive pressure washing session can do years worth of weathering damage to mortar joints, opening gaps that let moisture in throughout the autumn and winter.
Wood and composite decking. Pressure washers strip the surface fibres from wood decking, leaving it rough, grey, and more susceptible to moisture absorption. On composite decking, high pressure can cause pitting and surface damage that is difficult to reverse.
Window frames and seals. The seals around window frames are designed to keep weather out. Directed at close range, high-pressure water can compromise those seals, allowing water infiltration into the window frame and the wall around it.
Roof shingles. This one is particularly important. Pressure washing a roof strips granules from the shingle surface. Granules are not decorative. They protect the underlying asphalt from UV degradation and provide fire resistance. Once they are gone, they do not come back, and the shingle's lifespan is shortened considerably.
What Soft Washing Is and Why It Works Better
Soft washing is an alternative approach that uses significantly lower water pressure combined with purpose-built cleaning solutions to break down biological growth, dirt, and oxidation at the source rather than blasting it off the surface.
The key difference is that soft washing treats the problem rather than just displacing it. Algae, mildew, and lichen are living organisms that attach to surfaces and grow back quickly if only removed mechanically. A soft-wash treatment breaks down the biological matter itself, which means surfaces stay cleaner for longer after treatment.
Lower pressure also means the cleaning solution does the work rather than the force of the water. That is a fundamentally safer approach for the surfaces it is applied to.
What Aluminators' Exterior Cleaning Process Looks Like
At Aluminators, we use a soft-wash system combined with manual hand-detailing on every exterior job. The process starts with a surface assessment before any cleaning begins. Different cladding types, different levels of soiling, and different conditions call for different approaches. We assess before we start rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method.
Throughout every job, your gardens and landscaping are protected. We do not leave runoff sitting in garden beds or against the base of plants. We also do a ground-level walkthrough with you before we leave, because we want to know that you are satisfied with the result before we go.
The services we offer include soft-wash siding cleaning for all cladding types, gutter cleaning and brightening, and window cleaning inside and out. For homeowners who want a full exterior refresh, we offer all three as a package in a single visit.
Before and After
The Connection to Your Roof
It is worth mentioning that the same principle applies to your roof. Pressure washing a roof is one of the more damaging things you can do to it. It strips the granules that protect the shingles, accelerates weathering, and can void manufacturer warranties.
If your roof is showing signs of wear, algae growth, or discolouration, the answer is not pressure. It is rejuvenation. Aluminators offers a university-developed roof rejuvenation treatment that restores shingle flexibility, locks in granules, and extends roof lifespan, all without any pressure washing involved. The treatment is backed by independent research from Iowa State University and comes with a 6-year transferable warranty.
If you are planning an exterior clean this summer, it is worth having the roof assessed at the same time. We can look at both in a single visit.
Why It Matters Beyond the Appearance
A clean exterior is not just about curb appeal. The biological growth that accumulates on siding, gutters, and roofing materials actively degrades those surfaces over time. Algae and mildew retain moisture against cladding. Blocked gutters push water into fascia and foundations. Hard water mineral deposits etch into glass permanently if left long enough.
Regular exterior maintenance done correctly extends the lifespan of your home's materials and prevents the kind of progressive damage that turns a reasonable maintenance job into a significant repair bill.
The difference between getting it done right and getting it done cheap tends to show up a year or two later, not on the day of the job.
